Sponsor Your Spouse, Partner or Dependent Children

Sponsor Your Spouse, Partner or Dependent Children

If you’re eligible, you can sponsor your spouse, partner or dependent children to become permanent residents of Canada.

If you do, you must be able to:

  • support them financially
  • make sure they don’t need social assistance from the government

To sponsor your spouse, partner or independant child if:

  • You’re at least 18 years old
  • You’re a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act
  • You’re able to prove that you’re not receiving social assistance for reasons other than a disability
  • you can provide for the basic needs of any persons you want to sponsor

Please note that if you live in Quebec, you must meet Quebec’s immigration sponsorship requirements, and you must sign an undertaking with the province of Quebec.

Sponsor Your Parents and Grandparents

The IRCC aren’t accepting any more applications for the 2022 process yet.

If you were invited to apply, there were two applications that you must submit for this program:

  • the sponsorship application and
  • the permanent residence application

Eligibilities:

You can sponsor your own parents and grandparents if

  • you’re invited to apply
  • you’re at least 18 years old
  • you live in Canada
  • you’re a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act
  • you have enough money to support the people you want to sponsor for a required perioed of time (20 years if you live outside Quebec)
    • to show that you have enough, you’ll have to provide your proof of income
    • you may have a spouse or common-law partner co-sign to combine your incomes
  • you meet all other requirements under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations

Please note that if you live in Quebec, you must meet Quebec’s immigration sponsorship requirements after IRCC approves your request. You must also sign an undertaking with the province of Quebec for 10 years’ length.

Super Visa

A super visa lets you visit your children or grandchildren for up to 5 years at a time. It’s a visa that provides multiple entries for a period up to 10 years.

To be eligible for a super visa, you must

  • be the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada
  • have a signed letter from your child or grandchild who invites you to Canada that includes
  • a promise of financial support for the length of your visit
  • the list and number of people in the household of this person
  • a copy of this person’s Canadian citizenship or permanent resident document
  • have proof of private medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company

This medical insurance needs to

  • be paid in full, or in instalments with a deposit (quotes aren’t accepted)
  • be valid for at least 1 year from the date you’ll enter Canada
  • cover your health care, hospitalization and repatriation
  • provide for at least $100,000 emergency coverage

Note: Private health insurance must be valid for each entry to Canada. Be prepared to show your proof of paid insurance to a border services officer if they ask to see it when you enter Canada.

You must also:

  • apply for a super visa from outside Canada
  • have your visa printed outside Canada (wait for visa office instructions)
  • be allowed to enter Canada
  • take an immigration medical exam
  • meet certain other conditions

Sponsor Your other relatives

You may be able to sponsor certain relatives to immigrate to Canada if you are

  • at least 18 years old and
  • a Canadian Citizenship or
  • permanent resident in Canada or
  • person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act

To sponsor a relative to come to Canada as a permanent relative, you must:

  • support your relative financially when they arrive
  • be able to meet basic needs for yourself and your relative, such as:
    • food
    • shelter
    • clothing
  • make sure your relative doesn’t need social assistance

Who you can sponsor:

Orphaned brother, sister, nephew, niece or grandchild, if they meet all of the following conditions

  • they’re related to you by blood or adoption
  • both their mother and father passed away
  • they’re under 18 years of age
  • they’re single (not married or in a common-law or conjugal relationship)

Other relative, if you meet all of these following conditions:

  • you don’t have a living relative you could sonsor instead
  • you don’t have any relatives who is a:
    • Canadian citizen
    • permanent resident
    • registered Indian under the Indian Act

If the relative you want to sponsor has a spouse, partner, or dependent children who will come with them to Canada, you must include them on the same sponsorship application.
